What is your perception of local tourist attractions? Perhaps you might think that tourist attractions are boring, expensive, and are meant for tourists only. However, I would say otherwise. Local tourist attractions can be educational, historical and extremely meaningful! To prove this point, my class and I completed a project which involved a visit to a local tourist attraction this June holidays. Let me tell you more about it.
Our class visited the Gardens by the Bay. You might wonder why we chose this place out of the countless places to visit in Singapore. We took notice of the Tulipmania Floral Display while exploring the various sites. For the majority of our class, it was the first time we heard of this display and were curious about what it would be like. Furthermore, we read that there would be over 40 varieties of tulips in a myriad of forms. What was more attractive was that this time, the theme was magical fairy tales, and we thought that it would be meaningful to see how our childhood fairy tales could be incorporated with flowers. With all these, was there a reason for us to visit another place instead?
As a class, we had to decide on the date, time and duration of our visit. Adding on, we had to prepare our schedule and route on that day. To do that, we had to be crystal clear about what to expect at each attraction, and some special activities or shows that we have to reach in time for. We dedicated our time afterschool, together with the teachers, to do some research on the place and to decide on our mode of transport for the day.
During the visit, we were all engrossed in the wide variety of beautiful tulips and the magical surrounding. As we walked through the bed of tulips, it was as if the flowers were telling us about the magical world of folklore, legends, fairy tales and nursery rhymes in plant language. We also watches the special dance performance at the Flower Dome, and interacted with some of the popular fairy tale characters on stilts, and took several photos with them! Before we left, we gathered as a class and took and class photo.
Even after we left, my classmates were still discussing about the amazing performances and magical flowers. Some were impressed by the gorgeous flowers like the ‘Red Riding Hood‘, ‘Grand Perfection’ and ‘Purple Prince’, while the rest were left in awe as they witnessed the dance performance. One of my classmates said this, “I did not expect much from this attraction as I thought we were merely enjoying the view of flowers, but this experience was truly an eye-opening one.” We learnt a lot about the floras at Gardens by the Bay and learnt to appreciate it.
Now that you know how educational and significant local tourist attractions can be, do you want to visit one right away? As the saying goes, ”It is better to see something once, than to hear about it a thousand times.” You would not be able to understand and appreciate local tourist attractions unless you experience it yourself. So I would say, why not?
