An childhood experience that I particularly enjoyed

Writer: Vivian LimVivian Lim

In my childhood, there have been countless fun-filled experiences. Most of these precious times were spent in Hong Kong, my default destination during the school holidays, where I visit my paternal grandparents and aunt's family.

Among these memories, the most memorable experience happened when I was nine years old. That day, my aunt told my brother and I that she had discovered a newly opened car-themed cafe, and could not wait to bring us there. Upon hearing the word 'car', my brother started bouncing up and down on his toes. 'Where? I want to go there!' he said. Soon, my aunt drove us, along with my parents, to that cafe, which would end up becoming the number one cafe in our hearts.

Simply looking from afar, the cafe looked spectacular. The model of a car stood at the entrance, and the signboard showed the Italian flag, with the words 'Fiat Cafe'. This further ignited our interest, as we were huge fans of Italian food! We dashed across the road to the entrance, and stepped into what felt like a beautiful dream.

We could not imagine the sight ahead of us. We saw benches that resembled car seats, pictures of grand-looking automobiles, and so much more! The menu was even more attractive : they offered my favourite carbonara pasta and chicken nuggets, my brother's favourite Hawaiian pizza, and the iced chocolate drink, something the two of us would never have enough of. We placed our orders, and soon a feast was delivered in front of our eyes.

I began my meal by slurping on my cup of iced chocolate. It tasted so wonderful, and watching how I seemed to be enjoying my drink so much, my brother joined in. Soon, the cafe was filled with the sound of us slurping the straws, and my father took multiple pictures of us having a 'slurping competition', where we tried to create the loudest slurping sound possible. Till this day, my father still keeps one of these photos as his phone wallpaper! Even after we were done with our drinks, we continued slurping on the straws, causing a ruckus of laughter around our table.

Next, we began attacking the pasta. Upon contact with my tastebuds, I immediately fell in love with the pasta and its sauce. I could tell that my family members enjoyed it too, because even my mum, who always had a small appetite, ate a decent portion of the pasta. In moments, two large plates of pasta were gone, and we started feasting on the pizza.

Before finishing his first slice of pizza, my brother had already transferred a few more into his plate, to prevent us from finishing the rest and 'depriving him of his share'. His action made us roar with laughter again, but once we had a bite of the pizza, we undertood why he did that. Immediately, the rest of us began snatching for pizzas too, until the plate was empty. Even after we were full from all the food, we still wanted more because the food was too scrumptious.

Throughout the meal, I experienced a whale of time with my family members. There, we enjoyed a sumptuous meal, and created a valuable memory together. Many say that the best way for a family to bond together is through food. Indeed, that is true. That day marked one of my most enjoyable childhood experiences, and if I could, I would return to that day again.
